UK lithium-sulfur innovator and Gelion subsidiary

Accelerating progress, underpinning market leadership

In 2023, Gelion acquired UK-based lithium-sulfur innovator OXLiD as part of our wider mission to master and commercialise lithium-sulfur battery technology.
Adding five experts to the team, important new IP, facilities in the UK and key relationships with UK universities and the Faraday Institution, this acquisition has expanded Gelion’s capabilities and trajectory as a next generation battery technology innovator.

People

The OXLiD team consists of five highly experienced scientists with significant battery research experience including doctorate degrees from top UK universities with deep lithium-sulfur and semi-solid electrolyte expertise.

Dr Adrien Amigues

President – Gelion UK & Europe

Dr Adrien Amigues was the former Head of IP for lithium-sulfur company OXIS Energy before founding OXLiD, and is now the President of Gelion for the UK and Europe.

Dr Gareth Hartley

Head of Lithium

Dr Gareth Hartley who completed a PhD from Oxford on next-generation batteries and served as Business Intelligence Manager at the Faraday Institution before becoming Principal Scientist at OXLiD, now drives Gelion’s research and development efforts on lithium-sulfur batteries

Technology/IP

In March 2023, Gelion acquired the lithium sulfur and silicon anode patent portfolio (including solid and liquid electrolytes, electrode formulation and battery materials recycling) from Johnson Matthey.

The combination of strengths from Gelion’s research and development and existing IP and the Johnson Matthey IP and knowledge, and the IP portfolio from OXLiD, enhances and accelerates the path to product validation and commercialisation in the rapidly emerging lithium-sulfur market.

Partnerships

The acquisition also further solidified Gelion’s relationships with blue chip academic institutions (Oxford, Nottingham, and UCL) and access to the UK’s LiSTAR and Faraday Institution’s supported technological research network.

The Faraday Institution is the UK’s leading research institute advancing battery science and technology and is running a Lithium Sulfur Technology Accelerator (LiSTAR) program specifically focused on lithium-sulfur battery technology.

Facilities

With OXLiD’s research centered at the University of Nottingham, the company is currently building a lab located at Oxford (independent from the University) that will become Gelion’s flagship European development facility.
