Australia

The University of Sydney was founded in 1850 and is Australia’s first university. It has a well-earned reputation for research and education excellence and is one of the global top 50 universities, attracting academic leaders and students from all over the world. Gelion’s original sulfur cathode patent was developed at the University of Sydney and the company was spun out of the university in 2015, led by Professor Thomas Maschmeyer. The university remains an important investor in Gelion, supporting its research efforts with cost-effective access to laboratories and equipment, ensuring Gelion is well-positioned to commercialise its sulfur technology.

Glencore mines coals, metals and minerals. The company is one of Australia’s largest producers of coal, cobalt, zinc, nickel and copper, and one of the world’s largest, globally diversified resource companies. Gelion has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with to assess the suitability of Gelion’s next generation battery technologies for Glencore to use in stationary storage applications on mining sites, and for mobile applications such as mining vehicles. There is also the opportunity for Glencore to supply materials to Gelion for battery manufacture, and for the companies to work together on battery recycling.
